Quick Tips You Can Do at Home When on Budget 

Let’s face it. We all would love to have a pampering session as a part of our weekly routine. However, the line between self-care and priorities, is often quite thin. This doesn’t mean that you can’t set aside a few minutes in order to pamper yourself, however. Indulging yourself in a bit of self-care also doesn’t mean that you have to dish out hundreds of dollars and make an appointment at your local “celebrity acclaimed” spa. Sometimes, you have to work with the resources that you have. In this blog, you’ll find some simple at home nail care tips that will hold you over during those times where your daily planner is too full to be fed any additional meals. 

We’ve all heard it before: “Eat a healthy, balanced diet.” You know how they say that money is the root of all evil? Well in the world of self-care, your dietary habits can be the root of all evil. The things that you eat have a direct effect on every aspect of your life. This is why maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is the number one way to start incorporating nail care at home.

 

1. Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.
So, what exactly does a healthy diet (and one that’s beneficial for your nails) entail? Fingernails are made up of a protein called Keratin, which is the same protein found in your hair and nails. Therefore, remind yourself that your nails need the same nourishment that your skin and hair do. Vitamins like Biotin, fish oil, and Vitamin E are great assets to add to your daily regimen. However, simply adding a supplement does not suffice. Certain foods can also have a positive impact on strengthening your nails, and your health overall. Egg yolks, vegetables, beetroot, and nuts are a few of the wholesome food options that you can add to your lunch box. 

 

2. Trim your nails.
Think of your hair and nails as siblings. Just like regularly trimming your hair is beneficial to its growth, the same is true for your nails. That’s not all that trimming your nails does, however. Trimming your nails also contributes to your overall hygiene. With all that we do every day, and everything that our hands touch, picking up germs and bacteria are inevitable. Longer nails are more susceptible to accumulating these buildups. Trimming the nails can help combat this and decrease the amount of bacteria stored on the hands and under the nails.

 

3. Moisturize your hands and nails.
Like your skin and hair, your nails need moisture! It’s important to remember to protect yourself against situations that put the moisture of your hands and nails at risk. Your hands and nails can dry out quickly. For this reason, you should always remember to wear rubber gloves when washing dishes (extended exposure to water can cause them to be brittle and crack), wear rubber gloves when cleaning (harsh chemicals can also harm the nails), and always moisturize once your hands have been exposed to anything that could dry them out. Coconut oil, flaxseed oil, tea tree oil and olive oil are all wonderful solutions for topical application to the nails. Any time you get a free second, massage the bed of your nails with these oils, and they’ll thank you for the pampering session! If you have a bit more time on your hands, prepare a bowl of salt water, water with freshly squeezed lemon juice, or lukewarm mustard oil, and soak your hands in the solution for 5 to 10 minutes. Be sure to rub and massage the hands and nails in order to improve the circulation of blood flow, and further moisturize. Once done soaking your hands, cleanse them with hot water, and follow with a moisturizer and natural cuticle cream that is free of harsh chemicals. 

 

4. Educate yourself.
Knowing what to do and what not to do is essential to caring for your nails on your own. Avoiding harsh nail polishes, biting the nails, using gels and acrylics, scraping off your nail polish, not applying a basecoat before painting the nails, neglecting to moisturize, avoiding a nourishing diet, using rough emery boards, picking at your cuticles, and pulling off hangnails can all contribute to unhealthy nails. If you educate yourself on proper nail care, it could save you from rushing to the salon with a nail crisis. The goal should be to maintain healthy nails, not constantly trying to nurse them back to health.
